Explore creativity, improve confidence, practice English and take centre stage!
Every Monday at 6.30PM we run FREE workshops for migrants and refugees at the Engine Room, a lovely community centre, 5 mins from Tottenham Hale. We also offer the opportunity to join us ONLINE
These incredibly popular sessions, open to everyone, no matter their level of English or their experience, mix exercises from Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed with techniques LegalAliens have devleoped through the years. Perfect for ESOL students and those wishing to practice English in a creative way, as well as anyone interested in performing, the classes include simple theatre games, storytelling, improvisation, physical and vocal exploration, personal creativity and expression.
GAMES: We start with “theatre games” to warm up, work on team building, imagination, and listening. These exercises encourage conversation in a fun manner.
VOICE: Vocal exercises(articulation, breathing, pronunciation) are proved to build confidence, and are popular with people who are shy and scared to speak.
IMPROS: Guided improvisations are also part of the sessions, with participants being encouraged to invent stories , work on storytelling, free writing and creativity.
ACTING: Traditional acting techniques (like Meisner’s “repetitions” or Lecoq’s “states of tension”) are taught to develop speaking skills as well as confidence skills.
TEXT: We use extracts from contemporary and classic plays, to practice reading, build vocabulary and create characters.
The workshops have been supported by Arts Council England, Harnisch Foundation, LUSH, Haringey Welcome, Consonant and Haringey Festival of Learning.
Every Monday (excluding bank holidays) 6.30-8.30PM
SESSIONS IN PERSON: They take place at THE ENGINE ROOM, Lebus Street, Tottenham N17 9FU. We guarantee a clean and disinfected place but PLEASE WEAR A MASK.
