FREE THEATRE CLASSES

for migrants, refugees & asylum seekers

MIGRANT THEATRE LONDON.jpg

Since 2018 we have been running FREE theatre classes every Monday at 6.45PM dedicated to migrants, refugees, asylum seekers and anyone with English as a second language. We are also happy to welcome members of the local community who cannot afford traditional acting classes.

Explore creativity, improve confidence, practice English and take centre stage!

The classes are open to everyone, no matter their level of English or their experience. They mix fun exercises from Augusto Boal’s Games for actors and non-actors with acting and speaking techniques LegalAliens has developed through the years.

Perfect for ESOL students and those wishing to practice English in a creative way, as well as anyone interested in performing, the sessions offer a safe space for people to meet, learn, and make friends while being creative.

At the end of each academic year, the group devises a performance. Participation isn’t compulsory but it is usually a moment of great excitement and learning.

Workshop Structure

GAMES

We start with “theatre games” to warm up, work on team building, imagination, and listening. These exercises encourage conversation in a fun manner.

VOICE

Vocal exercises (articulation, breathing, pronunciation) are proved to build confidence, and are popular with people who are shy and scared to speak.

IMPROS

Guided improvisations are also part of the sessions, with participants being encouraged to invent stories, work on storytelling, freewriting, and creativity.

ACTING

Traditional acting techniques (like Meisner’s “repetitions” or Lecoq’s “states of tension”) are taught to develop speaking skills as well as confidence skills.

TEXT

We use extracts from contemporary and classic plays, to practice reading, build vocabulary and create characters.

MOVEMENT

Change the text to include your own content. Adjust the font, size or scale to customize the style.

We also offer the opportunity to join us on Zoom via a link we share every Monday morning.

ONLINE

We meet at the Engine Room, Lebus Street, Tottenham, London N17 9FU (3 mins from Tottenham Hale). We can cover travel expenses for asylum seekers and anyone who can’t afford travel.
