FREE THEATRE CLASSES

for migrants, refugees & asylum seekers

MIGRANT THEATRE LONDON.jpg

Since 2018 we have been running FREE theatre classes every Monday at 6.45PM dedicated to migrants, refugees, asylum seekers and anyone with English as a second language. We are also happy to welcome members of the local community who cannot afford traditional acting classes.

The sessions, all led by migrant artists from our team - take place at THE ENGINE ROOM TOTTENHAM HALE, and are an incredible opportunity to build friendships, express creatively and learn new skills.

Explore creativity, improve confidence, practise English and take centre stage!

"With LegalAliens, I have found a family, it's so much fun and I learn so much."
(Yuna M., asylum seeker)

The classes are open to everyone, no matter their level of English or their experience. They mix fun, confidence-building exercises from Augusto Boal’s Games For Actors And Non-Actors with acting and movement techniques LegalAliens has developed through the years.

Perfect for ESOL students and those wishing to practice English in a creative way, as well as anyone interested in performing, the sessions offer a safe space for people to meet, learn, and make friends while being creative.

At the end of each academic year, the group devises a performance. Participation isn’t compulsory but it is usually a moment of great excitement and learning.

Who is it for?

Workshop Structure

GAMES

We start with “theatre games” to warm up, work on team building, imagination, and listening. The develop conversation skills and physical presence

VOICE

Vocal exercises (articulation, breathing, pronunciation) build confidence, and are popular with people who are shy and scared to speak in public.

IMPROS

Guided improvisations are also part of the sessions, with participants being encouraged to invent stories, work on storytelling, freewriting, and creativity.

ACTING

Different acting techniques (inspired by the masters of international theatre like Lecoq’s, Barba and Bogart) are taught to develop skills and confidence.

TEXT

We use extracts from contemporary and classic plays, to practice reading, build vocabulary and create characters. Translation provided if needed.

MOVEMENT

Our approach always starts from the body and how to develop physical presence irrespective of participants' physical ability
